Tony Gwynn & Pete Rose – Debut Night Photo
A rare framed photo of Pete Rose congratulating Tony Gwynn on his first Major League hit—captured by Bill Romero on the night Gwynn’s Hall of Fame career began.
Description
Framed original photograph taken by Bill Romero on July 19, 1982, capturing Pete Rose congratulating Tony Gwynn after his first Major League hit during Gwynn’s debut with the San Diego Padres. Later that night, after Gwynn notched his second hit, Rose famously advised, “Don’t catch me all in one night.” Printed in the San Diego Union-Tribune the next day, this is a rare high-quality version of an image otherwise only seen in grainy newspaper form.
Gwynn, a two-sport star at San Diego State, was drafted in 1981 by both the Padres and the NBA’s San Diego Clippers. He chose baseball—and over 20 seasons became one of the most consistent hitters in MLB history, retiring with a .338 career average and 3,141 hits in 2,400 games. This photo captures the moment it all began.
