Gwynn, as an outfielder for the San Diego Padres, claimed this honor during what was one of his finest statistical seasons. In 1997, Gwynn hit an astounding .372—his highest batting average in a full season—along with a career-high 220 hits, 17 home runs, and 119 RBIs, marking his highest-ever single-season RBI total. His only higher batting average came during the strike-shortened 1994 season. His dominance at the plate led the league in both hits and batting average, solidifying his reputation as one of the greatest hitters of all time.
