RIAA Platinum Award and Billboard Chart Award for 'Efil4zaggin' – Presented to DJ Yella
Platinum Sales Award presented to DJ Yella commemorating over 1 million copies sold of N.W.A.’s Efil4zaggin on Ruthless/Priority Records. Includes a framed Billboard Top Pop Albums chart from June 22, 1991.
Description
Presented to Antoine “DJ Yella” Carraby, this official RIAA Platinum award celebrates the sale of more than one million units of Efil4zaggin—the second and final full-length studio album from N.W.A. Released in May 1991 through Ruthless Records and distributed by Priority, the record debuted at No. 2 and hit No. 1 on the Billboard Top Pop Albums chart just a few weeks later, marking a historic moment: the first time a gangsta rap album had topped the U.S. pop charts.
Efil4zaggin (a backronym of “Niggaz4Life”) arrived at a critical moment in the group’s trajectory. Ice Cube had departed following Straight Outta Compton, and the group—now made up of Dr. Dre, MC Ren, Eazy-E, and DJ Yella—doubled down on aggressive lyricism and high-production studio work. DJ Yella and Dr. Dre co-produced the album, pushing forward a dense, layered sound that combined G-funk instrumentation with ruthlessly sharp drum programming.
The album was controversial, heavily criticized in mainstream press for its explicit themes and raw commentary, but it also represented a shift: rap was no longer peripheral—it was dominant. The included Billboard chart from June 22, 1991, captures the exact moment Efil4zaggin overtook acts like R.E.M., Paula Abdul, and Seal to claim the top spot. That issue’s headline reads: “N.W.A. Takes Hardcore Rap Straight to Top of Pop Albums Chart.”
The plaque includes silver-colored vinyl and cassette components, a printed RIAA certification plate personalized to DJ Yella, an inset of the original album art, and a full reproduction of the #1 Billboard Top Pop Albums chart from the week of June 22, 1991—signed by DJ Yella on the outer glass.
