In the top of the ninth inning, he delivered a hit off reliever Doug Sisk, contributing to a 6-1 victory for the Padres at Shea Stadium. Gwynn finished the day 1-for-4 with a walk, continuing his steady production as a top-of-the-lineup catalyst. This hit added to a season that would see Gwynn collect over 190 hits and maintain a batting average north of .300, all while building a reputation as one of the game's most consistent and reliable offensive threats.
