Description

On September 16, 1987, the San Diego Padres defeated the Atlanta Braves 3–0 at Jack Murphy Stadium. That night, Tony Gwynn recorded his 200th hit of the season—a triple to the gap off pitcher Kevin Coffman. It was Gwynn’s 13th triple of the year, tying a Padres single-season franchise record. The ball from that hit, preserved in a clear display cube, carries three sides of handwritten notes by Gwynn himself. He logged the game’s date, opponent, stat line (3 AB, 1 H), and personal milestones: “My 3rd time in 4 years with 200 hits or better” and “Set club record for triples – 13.”

The 1987 campaign was one of Gwynn’s finest. He led the National League with 218 hits and a .370 batting average, earning his second batting title. He also swiped 56 bases, becoming the first NL player to ever hit .370+ and steal 50+ in a single season—an achievement still unmatched.
